Despite his supervisor's advice, he managed to get his hands on one of the modified logic modules, intending to do some independent investigation of the issue. He found that the technicians had made strange modifications to the mechanicals' logic modules but was told to not worry about it by his supervisor. He was suspicious of the team of technicians sent by Spacer's Choice to refit the plant's population of mechanicals due to the action being out of character with the company's protocol of being as cheap as possible. Ĭhester was an engineer and mechanic for Spacer's Choice prior to the security lockdown, specializing in repairing, maintaining and upgrading the automechanicals that populate the plant. Despite this, he uses his middle initial to remind himself that he is "Definitely Not Insane". However, he is slowly going insane in his isolation, believing the Stranger to be a phantom when they first meet, and blaming his potential hallucinations on the ingestion of raw sprats. Chester has been trapped in the plant due to the resultant security lockdown and has stayed alive by eating sprats which he cites as an excellent source of his daily recommended intake of mercury. He was spared the massacre as he was on cleaning duty at the time that the mechanicals turned on the staff. Chester Higgins is the sole human survivor of the automechanical guards at the geothermal power plant turning on the plant's human occupants.
